I picked Phantasy Star Portable up about 2 weeks ago with some funds aquired from my birthday. I had never played a Phantasy Star game before but I had heard that this was a decent dungeon crawler for the psp and I do like me some dungeon crawling.
My Cast character is at level 25 now and I’m enjoying the game so far. I’ve been playing the story mode which apprently has around 15-20 hours of gameplay. I don’t really care of the story or characters at all, they have about as much depth as a sheet of paper. I should of really ignored the story mode and went for the multiplayer mode which you can solo with the help of npcs.
The game does let you down with some flaws. Such as the horrible party A.I. you basically have to use a melee weapon if you want to get them to attack because if you don’t drag them over to a enemy they will just stand there looking stupid. The music is also pretty horrible, thankfully I listen to my ipod whilst playing most of my psp games on the train.
I think the only reason I really like this game is that I’m kind of O.C.D. with rpgs and I love leveling my character up and getting the best weapons. The game really does need some more polish in regards to combat and character customisation as its pretty straight foward. If they had spend more time in this area it would of been more of a hit.
