Review: Monster Hunter Freedom Unite

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite

It’s finally here! After months of waiting my copy of MHFU arrived via Play Asia. MHFU isn’t really an new game, it’s more of an expansion, but that doesn’t mean its not worth purchasing. It adds so many new things to the game that you won’t know how you did without it before.

The best new feature in MHFU is probably the Felyne Comrade.  I love this because being a solo player quests are harder for me, with no one to distract monsters or do some extra damage.

Newer players will find their Felyne’s are really that helpful aside from distracting monsters when they take a potion etc. They can be really helpful so long as you get the right type of cat and select right skills for them. Right now I’m using a “Small Bomber” Felyne. He’s a bomb only user, I’m currently training up his defence and I’m going to select Guard up Increase, High Grade Ear Plugs and Underground Recover Increase.

G ranked missions are back. I’m told these are super hard and monsters will two hit you when their in rage mode. They have also added in old versions of maps like the desert and swamp which will be interesting to play on.

Another awesome feature is the data install which lets you install part of the game on your memory stick. This speeds up loading times greatly. Now instead of waiting like 20 seconds to load a quest its done in around 4-5. It also makes loading between zones very fast which is great when you want to hunt something and not wait around.

MHFU is probably the longest game on the PSP now with over 500 hours of gameplay. Some people have 1000+ hour saves and the game technically never ends. This is one of the reasons I love MHFU it’s like a little MMO that you can take around with you.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite

I’ve saved the best new feature for last. The new monsters!

  • Nargacuga – Similar to Tigrex in fighting style. This guy is scary looking and fast!
  • Hypnocatrice – Like a big Kut-Ku with feathers and some interesting moves!
  • Yama Tsukami – A huge flying tentacle monster.  I’m looking forward to taking this guy down!
  • Ukanlos – The opposite to Akantor. I haven’t got up to Akantor yet, apparently he earns you the most zenny of any MH quest ever!
  • Volcansioth – A Volcanic Wyvern. I’m going to shoot him up a water element bow!
  • Alternative monsters  versions : Copper Blangonga, in the ‘Desert’ area, a “Emerald Congalala” in the ‘Jungle’ and in the ‘Swamp’ area, a “Plum Daimyo Hermitaur(As seen above)” in the ‘Desert’ and ‘Jungle’ areas and a Terra S.Ceanataur in the ‘Swamp’ and ‘Volcano’ areas.

As I’ve said before in MHF2 this game is probably suited to hardcore gamers rather than the casual crowd. Because things such as no-lock on and no difficulty settings will probably make casual gamers cry. MHFU can be a hard game but ultimately rewarding such as when you complete an armour set or take down a troublesome monster.

I’m giving Monster Hunter Freedom Unite: 8.5/10
An awesome edition to the MH series

This web site is actually quite sophisticated, but for some reason it does not display properly when trying to view on my Nintendo Wii. If it helps, the console uses the Opera web browser and am forced to using the console for accessing the Net whilst my PC is away being fixed.

    Hi Diedra,

The site does render correctly on the newest PC version of Opera, Safari, Chrome, IE and Firefox.
I’ve also viewed it on on my iPhone and PSP with no errors.

I have viewed the site on the wii also in the past and didn’t notice any errors. What seems to be going wrong?
